The rest of the members who were elected along with Mangezah four years ago quit their posts along the way, leaving the HBL to co-opt other officials to complete the tenure.
Charmaine Chamboko, who is the incumbent secretary, is seeking to retain the post and will face a challenge from Itayi Chafota and Andrew Chiaturo. Harmony Ndlovu from Mablazo will square off against Raiderz’s Martin Mukweva to lead the technical portfolio while Brighton Navaya and Forbes Shuva are seeking to lead the referees committee.
Simba Mungomezi from Mbare Heats is hoping to lead the competitions’ committee while Fungai Zinatsa, Freeman Mutada, Kelvin Ben and Sandra Satumba have thrown in their names for the women and youth commission.
Carlos Munda, the HBL spokesperson, yesterday challenged the clubs to elect candidates who should be able to restore the sport of basketball to its glory days just before the turn of the millennium.
“I would say I was disappointed with a number of things during the just-ended season, especially on the technical side of the game. As a league, we need to improve the way we run our fixtures and programmes so that we restore basketball to its glory days during the Mashonaland Basketball Association.
“The challenge now is on the clubs to elect people who have the zeal and should take basketball to another level,” said Munda.
Cameo Sigauke won the 2012/2013 men’s league while Dzivaresekwa Raiderz were crowned the champions in the women’s section with Black Rhinos winning promotion from the men’s B League.
