HWANGE Colliery Company will on Friday host the Chamber of Mines South Zone First Aid competitions at the Colliery Stadium with 23 teams taking part both in underground and surface categories.

Speaking on behalf of the hosts, Hwange Colliery Safety, Health and Environmental quality manager Mr Butholezwe Dube, said preparations for the annual event for the country’s mining companies were now in place.

“As Hwange we are ready to host other mines that are coming down for the competitions. Preparatory meetings and other logistical preparations are now in full swing. I am happy with the preparations by our surface and underground teams who will represent us and I hope their displays will demonstrate the company’s seriousness in maintaining robust and vibrant First Aid systems and emergency preparedness in general,” he said.

Mr Dube said teams that will compete in the surface category will include Hwange, Vumbachikwe Mine, Mimosa Mine, Zimbabwe School of Mines, How Mine, Zimplats (two), Unki Mine, Renco Mine, Blanket Mine, Murowa Diamonds and Isabella Mine.

“Underground teams are Hwange, Vumbachikwe Mine, Mimosa Mine, Zimbabwe School of Mines, How Mine, Zimplats (three), Unki Mine, Renco Mine and Blanket Mine. Winners from the zonal competitions will proceed to the national finals at a later date to be announced by the Chamber of Mines,” he said.

Last year, Zimplats (Bimha Mine) won both the surface and underground categories at the event that was held at Freda Rebecca Mine. The Hwange District Medical Officer Dr Widsom Kurauone will be the guest of honour.
