THE health fraternity is mourning the death of respected healthcare professional and National AIDS Council (NAC) board member Dr Isheanesu Nkomo, who died last Tuesday.
Dr Nkomo, who was buried at Glen Forest Memorial Park in Harare on Saturday, served on the NAC board from January 1, 2025, until his death.
He was also the Consulting Head of Pharmacies and a board member of First Mutual Health Services, where he contributed to efforts to strengthen healthcare delivery and improve patient care.
His death has been described as a loss to the health sector, with colleagues and institutions remembering him as a dedicated, knowledgeable and strategic professional whose work extended across different areas of healthcare.
In a condolence message, Health and Child Care Minister Dr Douglas Mombeshora said Dr Nkomo’s service to NAC had made a valuable contribution to Zimbabwe’s national health response, particularly the fight against HIV and AIDS.
“His commitment, wisdom and professionalism, together with his valuable contribution to the health sector, will be fondly remembered and greatly cherished. Through his service, Dr Nkomo contributed to strengthening the national response to HIV and AIDS and improving the lives of communities across Zimbabwe,” he said.
Dr Mombeshora said Dr Nkomo’s contribution would be remembered across the health sector and by communities that benefited from his work.
“The Ministry of Health and Child Care joins the National AIDS Council, the health sector and all those who knew and worked with Dr Nkomo in mourning the loss of a dedicated public health professional and colleague. At this difficult time, the Ministry extends its heartfelt sympathies to his family, friends, colleagues and all those who mourn his passing. May they find comfort and strength in the memories of his life, service and contribution to the nation,” Dr Mombeshora said.
NAC board chairperson Mrs Nester Mukwehwa said the council had lost a humble, knowledgeable and strategic team player whose contribution extended beyond the organisation.
She said Dr Nkomo’s contribution to the health sector, both through NAC and in other capacities, would continue to be valued.
“The Council has lost a humble, knowledgeable, independent and strategic team player whose contribution to the health sector, both within and beyond NAC, will be remembered and valued,” Mrs Mukwehwa said.
First Mutual Holdings Limited also mourned Dr Nkomo, describing him as a respected healthcare professional whose expertise and dedication had contributed significantly to healthcare delivery within the group.
“Dr Nkomo was a respected healthcare professional whose dedication, expertise and commitment to excellence contributed significantly to healthcare delivery within the Group. His leadership, wisdom and passion for improving patient care earned him the admiration of colleagues, stakeholders and the communities he served,” the company said.
Dr Nkomo is survived by his wife and children.
