A PROMINENT Bulawayo surgeon, Dr Nehemiah Tapererwa Munyoro who served in the city’s major hospitals for 50 years, has died.
He was 79.
Mr Godfrey Munyoro, who is the family spokesperson, said his uncle died on Friday after succumbing to heart failure.
Dr Munyoro was a renowned specialist doctor in gynaecology and obstetrics who served the community of Bulawayo since 1966.
During his career spanning five decades, Dr Munyoro worked at Mpilo Central Hospital, United Bulawayo Hospitals and Mater Dei Hospital as a consultant and specialist doctor.
Mr Munyoro described his uncle a humble and patriotic Zimbabwean who served his community with diligence and care.
He was an active board member of the Jairos Jiri Association who also served as the organisation’s fund raising committee chairman.
“Dr Munyoro contributed immensely towards the upliftment and welfare of the Jairos Jiri community. He was also an active member of the Rotarians which particularly helped institutions such as Mpilo Central Hospital, UBH, Thorngrove shelter, Ekuphumuleni and Emthunzini weThemba children’s homes with donations in the form of wheelchairs and educational and medical equipment,” said Mr Munyoro.
Prior to his death, Dr Munyoro had retired from public practice and was now operating a private surgery in the city.
Born in Chiweshe in Mashonaland Central, Dr Munyoro is survived by wife Janet, a son and several grandchildren.
He is expected to be buried today at Lady Stanley Cemetery in Bulawayo.
