Luthando Mapepa Chipinge Correspondent—

SEVERAL households were left counting their losses after heavy rains destroyed houses and property in wards 12 and 13 in Chipinge East.

In Ward 13, a three-roomed house was completely destroyed by the rains, leaving the affected families including children sleeping in the open.

Good Samaritans led by Councillor Chipo Museri come to the rescue and built a temporary iron sheet structure for the affected families.

Chipinge District Civil Protection Unit chairperson, Mr William Mashava, was not reachable as he was reportedly out of office assessing the extent of the damage and looking at ways of assisting the affected families. In the same ward, another house had its roof blown off, while another one had its doors destroyed.

So far propertyworth hundreds of dollars was damaged.

In both cases, the CPU attended the scene to assess the damage.

In Ward 12, one household with a bed-ridden father and an ailing old man was also blown off. The household has seven young children and is urgent need of assistance.

In Ward 20, Cllr Charles Mugidho, said floods may affect families along Save River.

“The community along Save River is likely to be affected by floods because water levels are now high,” he said.
