MANICALAND is on high alert to prevent any weather-induced hazards, with the province activating its preparedness mechanisms as heavy rainfall accompanied by strong winds, thunder and lightning is expected throughout this week across the country.
The Meteorological Services Department (MSD) in conjunction with the Department of Civil Protection on Sunday issued an advisory warning the public to take precautionary measures.
Provincial head of the Department of Civil Protection in Manicaland Mr John Misi this afternoon said they remain vigilant of the situation, reiterating that it is imperative for people to prioritise safety and security.
“After receiving the advisory from MSD, we have sounded the alarm in all the district across the province. We have raised awareness from the village level through the District Development Coordinators to alert people of the potential threats of hazards.
“On our part as the Department of Civil Protection, we are prepared to promptly respond to any emergency situations working with other stakeholders, partners and health institutions. As we speak, we are in the process of rescuing 10 villagers that were marooned on an island on Save River in Mahenye Village, Ward 23 of Chipinge District,” he said.
Mr Misi said authorities will continue giving updates on the situation and urged citizens to heed advice from authorities.
