Heavy rains above 50 mm associated with lightning and strong winds are expected starting tomorrow until Friday in most parts of the country.

Meteorological Services Department said in an advisory note that Matabeleland North and South, Bulawayo Metropolitan, Midlands, Masvingo, Manicaland, Harare Metropolitan and all Mashonaland provinces are expected to receive heavy rains.

The MSD said there is a chance of flash floods in flood-prone areas and river basins in Masvingo, Manicaland, Harare, Bulawayo, Midlands and the northern parts of Matabeleland North.

“A thick cloud is approaching the western borders of the country from Botswana. It is expected to be coupled with moisture from the south-east,” it said.

“This will result in heavy rainfall (exceeding 50mm) as well as strong winds in provinces such as the northern parts of Matabeleland North, Matabeleland South, Bulawayo Metropolitan, Midlands, Manicaland, and Harare Metropolitan Provinces, effective from the afternoon of Wednesday, November 5, till Friday.

“Roads may also be slippery and visibility reduced by rainfall, thus requiring a need for increased braking distance.”

The department warned of fallen trees and power lines. The public was advised to take precautionary measures as advised by the Civil Protection Unit.

According to the MSD, it is important to mend rooftops, secure loose items, ensure animals are safe and trim loose hanging branches before the storm.

“When lightning flashes, go inside a house or building. Do not stand under a tree or next to a tall pole or object.

“During a storm, avoid the use of machines or open vehicles like tractors, avoid open areas, and avoid using taps or showers. Do not go into flooded areas and follow regular updates on official MSD platforms,” said the MSD.
