WOMEN living with disabilities have implored the government to provide them with free pads as they face various challenges during their menstrual period.
Nyasha Mahwende, who is the director of the Young Voices Disability Zimbabwe, opened up about the challenges which disabled women face during their periods.
“Pads are very expensive and it is difficult for someone with a disability to afford them as we do not use one packet of pads, we use two to three packets every month.
“The government must step in and assist us by providing us with free pads to help make that time of the month less stressful for us.”
She added:
“The re-usable pads are a great initiative but considering that we also have women with disabilities without hands it is not favourable as they would have difficulties washing them.
“Re-usable pads need to be washed thoroughly and ironed and for this lots of water is needed and water is a serious challenge in towns.
“Most women with disabilities are unable to fetch water for themselves hence they will not be able to use them.”
She has also worked with 3KTV, advocating for the rights of persons with disabilities.
She is also a 2023 Gender Champion with the Dutch Embassy.
