THE Herald and its Editor, Victoria Ruzvidzo, were among the top honourees at the National Blood Service Zimbabwe (NBSZ) awards ceremony held in Harare on Friday, receiving the prestigious Excellence Award and Champions Award for their outstanding contribution to blood donation advocacy.
NBSZ chief executive, Ms Lucy Marowa, emphasised the importance of recognising stakeholders who have supported the organisation’s lifesaving initiatives, particularly during 2024.
“Today is about recognising stakeholders that have supported the National Blood Service in the various activities that it undertook, especially during the year 2024,” she said.
“As an organisation, we need support in terms of mobilising blood donations, resources for us to keep operating, given that it takes money to produce a safe unit of blood and blood products, as well as even the media in terms of reporting responsibly and accurately.”
She highlighted The Herald’s role in disseminating critical information on blood donations, which has helped raise public awareness and sustain Zimbabwe’s blood supply.
Ms Marowa expressed hope that the awards programme would grow in significance, reinforcing the value of partnerships in advancing the national blood programme.
“As we go forward, hopefully we will grow this programme and it can really become something of note, so that our stakeholders realise that we value them and we see their worth to the organisation and to the nation,” she said.
The Herald’s recognition underscores its commitment to ethical journalism and community service, further cementing its reputation as a leader in responsible reporting.
