Herbert Chitepo tourney roars to life

THE Nyanga-Mutasa Herbert Chitepo Unity Day tournament roars to life on Monday, which is Unity Day, at St David’s Bonda Mission in Mutasa.

The commemorative tournament, which started last year, honours the life of the late national hero Herbert Chitepo, who hailed from Mutasa.

The tournament will see over 10 Nyanga-Mutasa social teams take part in soccer, netball and traditional dance competitions. The winners in each discipline will walk away with US$300 while the runners-up will get US$200 and US$100 cash prizes respectively. The organiser of the tournament, John Tarumbwa, said the tournament was mainly sponsored by the Herbert Chitepo Trust and other local benefactors.

“We realised that very few people knew about the history of the late national hero Herbert Chitepo and that he hailed from Mutasa at Bonda Mission Farm. Last year the idea was a mere social, localised commemoration, but this year we have decided to expand the idea and make it an annual event where we will even invite other teams from other districts,” said Tarumbwa. Tarumbwa added that during the liberation war Chitepo was the first legal advocate for the then Zimbabwe African National Union, who fought for the principles of freedom, unity and human dignity in the country, which is why it was befitting to hold the tournament annually on Unity Day.

Last year’s guest of honour was the Nyanga South legislator and new Minister of Information, Communication Technology and Courier Services, Supa Mandiwanzira. This year’s guest of honour could not be confirmed at time of going to print.
