ZIFA Northern Region Division One soccer league leaders Herentals have vowed to keep their foot on the pedal as they seek to wrap up the first half of the season in style against Mufakose United at the National Sports Stadium B Arena this afternoon.
The Harare-based side are leading by 11 points with the league set to reach half-way stage this weekend.
Herentals coach Kumbirai Mutiwekuziva said they are seeking to extend their lead going into the mid-season break.
“Since last year we have been in contention for promotion. I actually started with a positive mind that we can make it.
“Actually I need to conclude the first half in style, with collection of maximum points. It’s a home game again against Mufakose,” Mutiwekuziva said.
However, it will be a tricky assignment against Mufakose, who are also looking for a win after dropping in the last three games.
Karoi United board member, Kenson Kumponda, said they want maximum points today against ZRP Morris.
“We are expecting a win. But the problem is when a team is not playing well and when you are in good form every team is geared to upset you. So we are going to be at our best so that we can conquer them.
“I think this year we want to get that ticket to Premier League and we are ready for that. And I hope with the way we are playing and the motivation and the spirit that’s being exhibited by our players I think we are going to get it,” said Kumponda.
The league is expected to take a two-week break after this weekend’s games.
The Northern Region leadership will then meet next Saturday in Harare to review the way the league has been running and also announce their sponsor with effect from next year.
Northern Region chairman, Willard Manyengavana, said they are excited with the way things have been moving in the second tier.
“Tomorrow we are going to play the last games of our first half and we have our mid-term meeting the following weekend. And then we will also have a break, about two weeks break according to our fixtures unless if our meeting decides to change that.
“We are so excited about the way this league is going. If you look at the level of competition, this time around it’s much stiffer than what it was last year,’’ said Manyengavana.
