MATOBO Hills will be the place to be at the end of this month for those who love to mix nature and culture.
The Matopo Heritage Festival meant to promote rural based artistes while at the same time educating chidren about local art and culture, will be held from July 31 to August 5.
The festival will be held at the Amagugu International Heritage Centre (AIHC) under the theme, “Enhancing Awareness of Indigenous Cultural Heritage’.
The last day of the festival will be a family day out with performances from Djembe Monks, Drums of Peace, Nobuntu and Sunduza.
Programmes manager at AIHC Kgosi Nyathi said the Matobo Heritage Festival was inline with the new education curriculum that promotes arts.
“The main target are pupils from both primary and secondary school as well as students from tertiary institutions. Learners will during the festival visit areas of interest such as rock painting sites, Njelele shrine and surrounding villages. There will also be traditional games, dance and music as well as sampling of traditional foods, film screenings and many more,” said Nyathi.
Matobo was declared by Unesco as a World Heritage Site in 2003.
The festival seeks to promote the various cultural heritage elements found within the Site and also support the active participation of local communities in the preservation of the cultural heritage.
