BULAWAYO Chiefs coach John Nyikadzino says his side is relishing the opportunity to be part of the inaugural Munhumutapa Challenge Cup, describing the competition as one that celebrates Zimbabwe’s rich heritage while offering clubs a pathway to continental football.
Chiefs host Agama at Luveve Stadium this afternoon in a Round of 32 encounter, with both sides hoping to book a place in the next stage of the lucrative knockout tournament.
For Nyikadzino, the competition is more than just chasing silverware. He believes the Munhumutapa Challenge Cup is a fitting celebration of the country’s football culture, bringing together teams from different divisions under one banner while rewarding success with a chance to represent Zimbabwe on the African stage.
“We are very much excited to be part of this cup competition, which links Zimbabwe’s heritage with the future of the sport. The winners will represent Zimbabwe in Africa. It also embraces all levels of football and we are very much excited to be part of it. We are preparing well for this cup and we are looking forward to it,” said Nyikadzino.
Despite enjoying home advantage, the Chiefs mentor is taking nothing for granted against an Agama side that arrives in Bulawayo with confidence after winning its Chibuku Cup preliminary round fixture during the week.
Nyikadzino believes knockout football leaves no margin for error and has urged his players to remain focused throughout the contest.
“It won’t be an easy game but if our supporters come in their numbers to rally behind the team it can be easy for us. We expect the fans to rally behind the team like they do during league games,” he said.
Chiefs have built a reputation for playing attractive football and will be hoping to use their familiarity with Luveve Stadium to their advantage. However, the coach is aware that cup football often produces surprises, particularly when lower-tier sides are presented with an opportunity to test themselves against Premier Soccer League opposition.
“We are facing a team that recently played a cup game and won. There is no room for mistakes in a cup. We are rearing to go as a club,” Nyikadzino said.
The Munhumutapa Challenge Cup has generated significant excitement across Zimbabwean football by bringing together clubs from different leagues in a single knockout competition. With continental qualification at stake for the eventual champions, every match carries added significance.
For Bulawayo Chiefs, progression to the next round would not only keep their trophy ambitions alive but also reinforce their credentials as one of the teams capable of making a deep run in the tournament.
