MHONDORO is set to come alive tonight as some of Zimbabwe’s biggest musical acts converge at Chemhanza Grounds at Mubaira Growth Point in Mhondoro, Mashonaland West, for the Heroes Day gala.
The star-studded concert, which will run into the early hours of Wednesday, will bring together artistes from across the country in a celebration of Heroes Day, commemorated annually on August 10.
The impressive line-up features Matabeleland favourites Mzoe7, Clement Magwaza, Ma9Nine and LMG Choir alongside the Police Band, Allan Chimbetu, Chief Hwenje, Andy Muridzo, Simon Mutambi, Dorcas Moyo, Madhuve Sasha, Peter Moyo, Romeo Gasa, Baba Harare, Agartha Murudzwa, Atenda Chinx, Mark Ngwazi, DT Bio Mudhimba and Jah Signal.
This year’s National Heroes Day was commemorated on Monday under the theme “Lest We Forget”, with the Government continuing efforts to preserve Zimbabwe’s liberation heritage, including the rehabilitation of historic liberation war sites.
For the Matabeleland artistes on the bill, the gala presents more than an opportunity to entertain. It is also a platform to showcase the region’s rich musical talent on a national stage while honouring those who contributed to the country’s liberation.
Mzoe7 said he was honoured to be part of an event dedicated to remembering the sacrifices made by Zimbabwe’s heroes and heroines.
“It means a lot to me to be part of the performers as it’s a day that celebrates people who’ve done so much for this country. These are the people who made sure we have the freedom we have today, from mothers to soldiers, brothers and everyone who played a part in every aspect of the liberation struggle.
“Representing Matabeleland on the national stage always makes me feel honoured as we celebrate our own using our crafts. I’m bringing a very vibrant and colourful performance that will leave people wanting more, while spreading the message of love and happiness through my craft,” he said.
Ma9Nine said he viewed his selection as recognition of the work he has been putting into his career and promised an energetic performance.
“It means a lot to me as we’re celebrating our heroes. I feel very privileged to be selected for the national gala. As a musician, I really feel I’m working hard. People should expect fire,” he said.
For Magwaza, the gala is also an opportunity to take Matabeleland’s music to new audiences and strengthen his profile beyond the region.
“As an artiste from Matabeleland, being given an opportunity to be part of national programmes happening in other parts of the country helps the growth of our art. I’ll deliver a classic performance as I honour the departed heroes and heroines of this nation,” he said.
With a diverse line-up spanning genres and generations, organisers are expected to deliver a night that blends entertainment with remembrance as Zimbabweans celebrate the legacy of those who contributed to the country’s history.
