He’s a classic man…

I COULD hear the song playing while I was in the shower and just thought the chorus was rather catchy.

I didn’t care much about the instrumentation but the song’s lyrics kept ringing in my head for the next few days.

It was on Wednesday morning as I was taking a shower that I heard the song again — it was playing on DStv’s Trace Urban channel.

This time, I just had to watch the video and quench my curiosity, once and for all. I had carried around the lyrics to I’m a classic man by Jidenna featuring Roman Gian Arthur for too long and was pleased to finally see what this classic man was all about.

The song goes a little like this, “Even if she goes away . . . I’m a classic man . . . You can be mean when you look this clean . . . Your needs get met by the street, elegant old fashioned man . . . I’m a classic man.”

It was the suits, ties, pocket squares, watches, shoes, cravats and the clean looking men in the video that blew me away. Forget the choreography; the wardrobe on the set was simply on point!

This is the kind of guy you need to be — a classic man who’s on top of the situation, whatever the circumstances. All you need are a few classic pieces which will ensure your look is fresh and polished. A blazer is a definite must have. The cut will be determined by your body shape and height.

You want to have your first blazer in a neutral colour and then go adventurous as your collection grows. Start with the blacks, browns, navy blues, greys and then move over to the checkered and bolder colours. But if you’re charismatic — go for the bold colours and a single vent from the onset.

To pull off the blazer look well and be a classic man in every sense of the word, invest in a crisp white shirt. Every classy woman loves a man in a clean white shirt! Your blazer will add the pizazz to an otherwise boring look. And guess what; you won’t need to wear a tie on a crisp white shirt and classic blazer. All you’ll need is a good pair of chinos, the perfect belt and shoes and you’re good to go.

There’s a whole blazer revolution — you’ll find them in all sorts of colours, prints and cuts you’ll be shocked. If you doubt your fashion sense, pair your blazer with a white shirt on any day and you’ll never go wrong. The blazer look can be taken to different occasions — day or night. The secret is in your accessories.

For a polished evening look, wear your blazer with a pocket square and those who know will appreciate your sense of style.

Take it a notch higher and wear a bow tie or a cravat in a bold colour. The secret is making sure your blazer, shirt and pants hug your body perfectly.

I know he’s a classic man when he wears a blazer that fits him well, he’s in a white shirt, his chinos are equally flattering and his belt and shoes match.

If you’re going to wear a brown belt, wear brown shoes and if it’s going to be black, let it be black waist and feet. I know he’s a classic man because he feels naked when he doesn’t wear a watch.

You’ve no idea what accessories can do for you. Men generally don’t have too much to accessorise with so the secret is getting maximum style from the few pieces you have. You’ve killed the blazer look in your white shirt and chinos, belt and matching shoes and your watch is ticking from your wrist — your fragrance is the cherry on top.

I say “kuyabe soku maker sense” when a man’s fragrance announces his presence. Many people don’t get this but investing in a good fragrance speaks volumes of your sense of style. No woman wants to sit next to a man who stinks. Perhaps let me speak for myself, I love to get some “aroma therapy” from the man in my presence. Ever met men whose fragrances linger after they’ve left?

It’s not harsh neither does it harass your nostrils — the scent is nothing but therapeutic. That’s a classic man. I know he’s a classic man when he cares about how clean he looks and how fresh he smells.

This has been quite an interesting read. I’ve noticed that people are generally afraid of tailors. I’ve an important function to attend end of August and I’ve been struggling to get something to wear, I think I’m just going to get something made especially for me.
