‘Heynckes would love to go back to Real’

Bayern Munich career in style on Saturday night, his agent evoked the possibility of the 68-year-old returning to the club that he led to the 1998 Champions League title.

Enrique Reyes told Spain’s Radio Nacional that his client “would be delighted to return to Real Madrid” and “if Florentino (Perez, Real Madrid president) called him, he would certainly accept the offer.”

On the pitch, the side that is still Mourinho’s for now made a major intervention in the race for the fourth and final Champions League place. El Real drew 3-3 at Champions League hopefuls Real Sociedad in a thrilling match. With Gonzalo Higuain, Jose Callejon and Sami Khedira on the scoresheet, they led 2-0 and then 3-2 after being pegged back.

Yet the last-gasp equaliser bundled in by Xabi Prieto was the very least the Basque side deserved, with Diego Lopez making a string of fine saves for Mourinho’s men.

As it was, Sociedad were overtaken into the coveted fourth spot by Champions League perennials Valencia. The inevitable Roberto Soldado struck a second-half winner against Granada to give Los Che the edge going into the final round of fixtures. After the announcement that Barcelona are to sign Neymar, it was hardly surprising that a couple of the champions’ current forwards had points to prove in the derby at Espanyol.

A stunning opener by Alexis Sanchez was followed by an equally eye-catching second by Pedro, giving Barca a 2-0 victory. Another win over Malaga next weekend would see Tito Vilanova’s team finish with 100 points.

The relegation scrap will go to the wire. The three to go down from La Liga will come from the bottom four of (in ascending order) Real Mallorca, Real Zaragoza, Celta Vigo and Deportivo La Coruna. Even rock-bottom Mallorca can still escape after a goalless draw at Atletico Madrid. Celta have renewed hope after a 2-0 at Valladolid. Depor would have been safe with a win at Malaga but lost 3-1 — and their final fixture at home to Real Sociedad therefore has huge significance at both ends of the table.

In France, Paris Saint-Germain celebrated the end of their title-winning season with a 3-1 win at Lorient which, coupled with Marseille’s goalless draw with Reims, made their final winning margin 12 points. With David Beckham in attendance but not in the 18, PSG took the lead with Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s 30th Ligue 1 goal of the season, an outrageous chested finish.

Kevin Gameiro’s brace sealed matters, but there was a further twist. Fourth-choice goalkeeper Ronan Le Crom was brought on as substitute to make him eligible for a championship winners’ medal, but he was red-carded 20 minutes later for a professional foul. Defender Mamadou Sakho came on as PSG’s third ‘keeper of the night but could not stop Arnaud Le Lan’s penalty. Le Lan had not scored since October 21 2001, a gap of 4 235 days. — BBC Sport.
