Morebling Phiri in Plumtree
A Form Three pupil from Plumtree High School is writing his own success story as he will officiate in the upcoming Confederation of African Football Schools Championships to be held in Harare next week.
At just 16, Henry Mzenzeli Ndlovu will carve his own piece of history when he probably becomes the first Zimbabwean pupil to officiate at an international football extravaganza.
The Harare event will run from December 14-17 and has attracted the best Zimbabwean talent.
Zimbabwe has assembled a schools team for these Cosafa Championships whose cut off age is 15.
Ndlovu is a holder of a Class Three refereeing certificate.
Having officiated in Division Three matches, the woman’s Premier League and a friendly match between Highlanders and Mainline as an assistant referee, the young man is eyeing to one day to officiate as a Fifa panel member.
“I got the inspiration from my father (Johnson Ndlovu) who is also a referee and he always reiterate that I need to focus and not to be intimidated or frustrated by the supporters. I also get my inspiration from Faith Mloyi who is now vice chairperson of the referees’ committee as I used to watch her during her time as a referee,” Ndlovu said.
“My school has been very supportive and they have given me the platform to practice and perfect my skills in preparation for the great task ahead of me. It’s really a big occasion, the one I will frame and stick to my mind forever,” he said.
Plumtree High is clearly raising the next generation of referees as they also have two other pupils officiating in Zifa Division Two and Three games Unathi Moyo and Fortune Moyo both Form Four.
