THE Tinotenda Kadewere-sponsored Highfields Academy finally made its long awaited debut appearance at the Division 2 Zifa Cup, scoring an impressive 1-0 win over Acadia 1-0 at University of Zimbabwe yesterday.
An eleventh minute long range effort by Shaun Mupesa was enough to champion the team to an early lead, and subsequently score the much-needed win.
Highfield Academy- who only assembled their team last Saturday- had to dig deep into their defence front, and left head coach, Prince Kadewere, blushing from the applause of those in attendance.
“The guys played extremely well; especially if you consider the fact that that we only started pre-season last week,” said Kadewere.
“We conducted trials on that particular day, and called for our first training soon after.
“We managed two more sessions, before the game, and to get such a result obviously means a lot to us,” he said.
The gaffer had made it clear to the team, during their pre-match team talk, that they should not put themselves under too much pressure, but use the game as a confidence booster.
“To us, the win is a massive bonus; and it shows we are moving in the right direction.
“We are still trying out combinations, building the team from the ground up and I am I am happy that everything looks to be falling into place ahead of schedule,” he said.
The Academy side will now face Total F.C in an encounter in which if they win, they proceed to the quarter finals of the Cup tourney.
That match has been slated for this Sunday, at the University of Zimbabwe.
“When you make an impression on your maiden appearance, like this, most eyes will be n you and I have told my charges to relax and not to put too much pressure on themselves.
“There is no room for complacency, and the previous win is now water under the bridge, as we need renewed focus,” said the coach.
