Highlanders athlete needs US$2 700 for US Scholarship

ZIMBABWE’S track and field continues to show promise with Samukeliso Ndebele set to join the long list of young athletes based in the United States on a scholarship.

Ndebele was born and raised in Umguza District, she began her athletics journey at a young age and has since competed at both national and international levels.

She runs 100 and 200m races with personal best times of 11.84s and 24.30s respectively.

Ndebele is coached by Faith Dube, a Level Two sprints and hurdles specialist under the Highlanders Athletics Club.

Dube said that Ndebele’s talent has earned her recognition.

“Her dedication and perseverance have earned her a reputation as a national sprint queen and also it has gotten her an opportunity to study in the USA at New Mexico College on a full scholarship.

“We appeal to the corporate world and well-wishers to contribute to her travel expenses so she does not miss this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity,” said Dube.

Ndebele is a former bronze medalist at the African Under-20 Championships.

“She has won three national championships, best female national athlete and two provincial best female athlete awards. Her passion for the sport drives her to continually improve and push beyond boundaries,” said Dube.

Ndebele said she is proud to represent the Highlanders Athletics Club and the nation.

“I’m proud to represent Highlanders Athletics Club and the nation at large. I hope through my achievements I inspire other young athletes,” said Sibanda.

“Currently her ultimate goal is to balance sports and academics to secure life after sport at the same time pushing to break the national record and qualify for the next Olympics in the US in 2028,” said Dube.

Dube said the US$2 700 will assist her in the visa application and air ticket both of which she needs sorted out by 30 July.
