Highlanders fans turn Mhlophe birthday wishes into protest against his leadership

WHAT was meant to be a celebratory birthday message for Highlanders FC executive chairman Kenneth Mhlophe on the club’s official Facebook page quickly turned into a public barometer of supporter frustration, with hundreds of fans using the occasion to vent their anger over the club’s direction.

While a section of the Bosso faithful wished Mhlophe well and prayed for good health and wisdom, the dominant tone in the comment section reflected deep-seated dissatisfaction with the club’s performances, recruitment policy and overall administration.

Calls for the veteran administrator to step aside echoed loudly, with many supporters arguing that Highlanders are stagnating while rivals strengthen ahead of the new Castle Lager Premier Soccer League season.

“We are busy celebrating birthdays while other teams are signing players,” wrote one supporter, capturing a sentiment repeated throughout the thread.

Others questioned why Highlanders continue to lose key players while competitors “take everyone”, warning that the club risks further decline if decisive action is not taken.

Several fans openly urged Mhlophe to “retire from football”, suggesting that it was time to allow a younger generation to take over the reins at the Bulawayo giants.

Some questioned his football background, while others criticised what they described as outdated leadership methods and lack of transparency, particularly on player movements and signings.

There were also renewed calls for reforms within the club’s membership system, with some supporters urging fellow Bosso followers to become voting members so they can influence leadership decisions through constitutional processes rather than social media.

Despite the harsh criticism, a minority of supporters defended the chairman, urging patience and calling for unity ahead of the new season.

They cautioned against what they described as misplaced anger, insisting that Highlanders remain bigger than individuals.

The online backlash comes at a time when pressure is mounting on the Highlanders executive to deliver a competitive squad and restore pride at a club that will soon celebrate a historic milestone of 100 years.
