INCOMING Highlanders coach Thabo Senong returned to South Africa on Friday to await the processing of his work permit, the club has confirmed.
Senong, who is set to replace Pieter de Jongh at the Bosso dugout, had arrived in the country on Monday.
In a statement released on Friday evening, Highlanders dismissed rumours circulating on social media that the former Botswana national team coach had been deported, clarifying that his departure was a procedural requirement by immigration authorities.
“The club managed to submit the work permit application documents for coach Thabo Senong on Wednesday, 7 January, after the Sport and Recreation Commission cover letter was received,” read part of the statement.
“The Immigration Department acknowledged receipt of the application in good order, with an application tracking number issued.
“Today, regional Immigration Office officials visited the club and advised that, having successfully completed the permit application process, coach Thabo Senong is required to leave the country with immediate effect so that he does not engage in any activities that may jeopardise the work permit application.
“The club proceeded as advised and managed to secure an afternoon flight back to South Africa for him today.”
Immigration officials indicated that the work permit processing is expected to be completed within one to three weeks.
Meanwhile, Highlanders chief executive officer Denzel Mnkandla said assistant coach Mkhokheli Dube will continue to oversee the team’s pre-season preparations while Senong awaits clearance.
