HIGHLANDERS Football Club has expressed shock and sadness following the death of prominent businessman Wicknell Chivayo, his wife Lucy Muteke and three other people in a helicopter crash in Marondera on Wednesday.
The other victims have been identified as Senelisiwe Magagula, Captain Kelvin T Soda and Captain Courage Mutavirwa.
In a condolence message, Highlanders president Dumisani Sandi said the club was particularly saddened by Chivayo’s death after communicating with him shortly before the crash.
“Highlanders Football Club has learnt with profound shock and deep sadness of the sudden passing of Mr Wicknell Chivayo, Mrs Lucy Chivayo (née Muteki), Miss Senelisiwe Magagula, Captain Kelvin T Soda and Captain Courage Mutavirwa, following a tragic helicopter crash in Marondera yesterday late afternoon.
“The news is particularly difficult for us to comprehend, having communicated with Mr Chivhayo only a few moments before to express our sincere appreciation for his generous support and enduring friendship towards Highlanders Football Club,” said Sandi.
Chivayo had supported Highlanders over the past two years, particularly during key moments for the Bulawayo giants.
Sandi said the businessman’s contribution would remain an important part of the club’s history.
“Mr Chivayo leaves behind a legacy of generosity and a significant connection with Highlanders Football Club. His support to the club over the past two years, particularly during important moments in our journey, will remain deeply appreciated and remembered by the Highlanders family.
“At this very difficult moment, however, our thoughts are first and foremost with the loved ones of all those who lost their lives. We pray that they may find strength, comfort and courage in the days ahead,” said Mr Sandi.
