HIGHLANDERS have postponed their 2013 Player of the Year awards ceremony indefinitely. The move is a blow especially to a player like Bruce Kangwa who had a terrific season only to be denied a rare opportunity of making it into the country’s Soccer Star of the Year calendar after accumulating six yellow cards. Kangwa had been hoping to make amends for the miss by getting one of the most prized accolades at the club’s ceremony.
Announcing the postponement of the awards ceremony last night, Highlanders’ chairman Peter Dube said the move came after “purely budgetary considerations.”
“After making all considerations we have decided that it is an expense carrying function which is a disadvantage to the club. As club custodians, we thought maybe it is better not to eat so much into the budget just to stage a glamorous event. The money for the ceremony can help us at this stage because there are lots of expenses during off-season and the scarce resources can come in handy when we prepare for the start of the season,” said Dube.
Highlanders had a fruitful 2013 season that saw the team winning their first major cup in seven years. Bosso players went on to dominate the Mbada Diamonds Cup individual awards ceremony adding another feather to their prestigious tournament glory.
Eccentric goalkeeper Munyaradzi Diya smiled all the way to the bank after getting a cool $1,500 after being voted as the Player of the Tournament and for his heroic saves that saw him only conceding four goals in the competition, Diya got another $1,000 for being the Goalkeeper of the Tournament.
Highlanders’ trio of Njabulo Ncube, Gabriel Nyoni and Masimba Mambare shared the $1,000 for the top goalscorer’s accolade after scoring two each with Silas Songani of Harare City and Caps United’s Tawanda Nyamandwe.
Speed merchant Nyoni also got $500 for his opening goal against Triangle in the first round of the competition which was the Fastest Goal of the Tournament. Moyo, who had an outstanding performance in the final, went home $500 richer after being voted as the man of the match.
The 2013 Mbada Diamonds Cup winners also got the Most Disciplined Team of the Tournament accolade which had $1,000 prizemoney.
Last Friday, Diya received $1,000 for making it into the Castle Lager Soccer Stars of the Year calendar.
