Highlanders: The unbeatable wall… Defensive brilliance on the road to triumph

IN the world of football, they say “attack wins you games, defence wins you titles.” And in the case of Highlanders FC, this adage seems to have found a new meaning, thanks to their coach, Baltemar Brito, who once worked alongside the renowned Jose Mourinho during his tenure at Chelsea from 2004 to 2006.

Mourinho, often referred to as “The Special One,” is a tactical genius when it comes to implementing a defensive strategy once his team gains a lead. His expertise in holding on to a defensive stance has given birth to the phrase “park the bus,” epitomising the art of defending to secure victory.

Following in the footsteps of his mentor, Brito has imbibed these defensive principles into his team’s playing style. He understands that sometimes winning requires not just scoring goals but also shutting out the opposition. And this philosophy has already yielded remarkable results for Highlanders.

Highlanders’ method echoes Mourinho’s success during the 2004-05 campaign at Chelsea, where they clinched the Premier League title with a record-breaking 15 clean sheets and only one defeat. Such defensive prowess has paved the way for Highlanders’ current position at the top of the table with an impressive 31 points from 15 games and still unbeaten.

Key to their success has been their formidable defence, built on the shoulders of the seasoned goalkeeper Ariel Sibanda.

Like fine wine, Sibanda has matured with age, showcasing his skills and composure between the posts. With only four goals conceded in 15 league games, he has earned 11 clean sheets, leaving opposition attackers frustrated and fans applauding his exceptional performances. But the defensive strength doesn’t end with Sibanda; it extends to the solid partnership of Peter Muduhwa and Mbongeni Ndlovu at the centre of defence. What started as an impromptu pairing has evolved into an impenetrable wall, with their camaraderie and passion on full display. Both players are comfortable with the ball at their feet, enabling Highlanders to build their attacks from the back and show bravery when blocking shots.

In midfield, Highlanders’ defensive prowess has been further fortified with key additions. Melikhaya Ncube, acquired from Bulawayo City, has proven to be a revelation as a defensive midfielder. He not only cements his place in the central midfield but also contributes crucial goals for the team. Alongside him, Brighton Manhire adds another layer of protection, skilfully shielding the defence and reading the game impeccably.

To further bolster their tactical arsenal, Brito’s sights are set on securing the signature of Obriel Chirinda, who possesses incredible pace in attack. With Highlanders seeking to absorb pressure and break quickly on the counter, Chirinda’s addition could be the final piece to the puzzle. His recent hat-trick against Triangle and impressive goal-scoring record make him an enticing prospect for the team.

The Bosso family dares to dream, and why not? It has been years since they last lifted the league championship in 2006.

But under the tactical brilliance of Brito and their defensive excellence, Highlanders is on course to reclaim their place at the top. As the footballing world watches in anticipation, this defensive master class could very well be the key to Highlanders’ journey to glory.
