Singwazi Lodge: Where African heritage meets modern hospitality

IN the heart of Gwanda, a town rich in African culture and heritage, an extraordinary entrepreneur, George Mlilo, has woven a tale of ambition and passion that transcends tradition. Here, cattle have always symbolised wealth, and their significance remains firmly rooted in the local culture. But Mlilo, inspired by a fierce desire to develop his beloved home area, chose a different path — one that would elevate the town’s potential and redefine its allure for travellers passing through.

In a move that surprised many, Mlilo decided to sell 200 of his 400 cattle, a move that seemed unconventional at first.

However, the visionary farmer had a grand plan in mind — to establish a modern hospitality facility outside the mining town. Thus, in 2020, Singwazi Lodge was born, a haven that would prove to be a godsend for those facing accommodation challenges while journeying through the bustling mining town.

Situated amid lush vegetation, Singwazi Lodge boasts a serene and natural environment, a testament to Mlilo’s deep love for nature. Seeking to provide his guests with an unforgettable experience, the lodge’s thatched grass roofing ensures a cool and refreshing atmosphere — a sanctuary from the scorching African sun.

But Mlilo’s story doesn’t end there. Before embarking on this entrepreneurial journey, he had a distinguished career as Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Local Government and Public Works. Before then, he served as Bulawayo’s director of engineering services.

With retirement came a newfound sense of purpose — to channel his energy into developing his home area and building a thriving business.

“Upon retiring from Government in 2019, I pondered on ways to uplift Gwanda,” he revealed, his eyes gleaming with determination.

“I noticed the lack of accommodation for travellers, and during peak times, people were forced to seek refuge in Bulawayo, depriving our town of valuable revenue. I envisioned a place that would bridge this gap and cater to a discerning clientele seeking authentic local experiences.”

Devotion, patience, and unwavering commitment have been the pillars of Mlilo’s success. Eschewing the temptation of loans, he chose to build his dream bit by bit, starting with a handful of rooms that have now blossomed into an exquisite lodge with expanded amenities. Singwazi Lodge is more than just a place to rest one’s head — it is a vibrant space that hosts weddings, corporate meetings, and lively parties, drawing people from all walks of life.

With a strong focus on sustainability, Singwazi Lodge is powered by solar energy, not only showcasing Mlilo’s dedication to cost-effectiveness but also his commitment to preserving the environment for future generations.

But beyond business, Mlilo espouses a powerful message: the responsibility of local communities to spearhead development.

“As Government reminds us, ‘ilizwe lakhiwa ngabaninilo;’ we have the power to develop our localities. It is up to us to invest in our communities, providing necessary services that attract revenue,” he passionately stated.

As travellers traverse the Beitbridge-Bulawayo Highway, they are welcomed by the hospitality of Gwanda, brought to life by Singwazi Lodge and its unforgettable experiences. Mlilo’s vision of creating leisure spots that captivate and charm has paid off, drawing visitors like moths to a flame.

In this journey of relentless dedication, Mlilo challenges fellow entrepreneurs to embrace modern standards, not just to appeal to locals, but to also stand toe-to-toe with service providers from across the nation. For it is in this endeavour that a town thrives, poverty is alleviated, and dreams are brought to life.
