HIGHLANDS Sports Club emerged overall winners of the Kwekwe Invitational Bowls tournament at Kwekwe Sports Club on Sunday. The tournament, which featured bowlers from all over the country, was played on round-robin format. The Highlands team, which comprised Tom Craven, Roy Garden, Dereck Robinson and Manuel Silva, beat Alexandra Sports Club’s Clive Robertson, Mike Eaton, Glen King and Ivan Pitout 21-12 in the final.
Highlands player Craven felt they had a good weekend of bowls as they gave their “best shots”.
“We had a nice weekend of bowling where we gave our best shots and we are glad that our hard work and team work paid,” said Craven.
Despite Alexandra’s loss in the final, one of their top players, Eaton, was happy with the team’s performance and said they enjoyed the tournament, which had a good turnout.
“We enjoyed the event. It had a good turnout. Playing Highlands was tough, we were doing very well and when we reached the 10th end, we were peeling 11-11. Unfortunately, we dropped by six shots on the 11th end and that made it difficult for us to catch up with only two ends remaining.
“We beat Kwekwe 19-7, but lost to Highlands in the final as they had a stronger side but we are still happy with our performance,” said Eaton.
Alexandra settled for second place while the hosts Kwekwe took third position.
Highlands won six out of the seven matches during this tournament.
Avondale Sports Club were the only team which defeated champions Highlands when they romped to a 12-7 at this event..
In the women’s section, Bulawayo Athletics Club were in dominant form on the greens and took the first place while Avondale settled for second place and Alexandra took third place.
