just attacked a driver with iron bars and robbed him of cash and other valuables.
Police on patrol last Friday managed to arrest Amon Chirenje (22), Takawira Chikoko (17), the George brothers Shine (22) and Amion (25), Nickson Machingura (20) and Paul Mangezi (22) after they had immobilised a truck.
They are all from nearby Chikuti farms and villages. Mashonaland West police spokesperson Inspector Clemence Mabgweazara confirmed the arrests.
“We have arrested six people in connection with a robbery along the Harare-Chirundu road after months of tracking the robbers who have been terrorising our road users especially truckers,” he said.
The robbers commonly referred to “makaramata” owing to the method of executing robberies where they jump onto a moving truck and cut the pressure pipes to bring the vehicles to a halt jumped onto the ERF truck that was headed towards Karoi.

They cut the pressure pipes and went to the driver as soon as the vehicle stopped after a few metres and struck him on the left leg and hand before demanding valuables.
The driver surrendered his two Nokia cellphones, a wheel spanner, a T-shirt and US$30 before they jumped off the truck in a bid to escape. However, alert Karoi rural police station officers on patrol saw the men attempting to flee and gave chase.
“This comes as good news to us as the police in the province owing to the havoc these men were causing along the highway.
“It should also be a relief to owners of the trucks that were being targeted,” he said.
The province had recorded 20 cases of robbery along the highway where pressure pipes were cut before drivers were attacked and robbed of valuables including consignments in some instances.
