MANY will remember Hip Hop fiesta, Jinga Re Gomo Urban Culture Movement held last Saturday at Courtauld Theatre as a successful and historic event that brought together a galaxy of upcoming and renowned artistes on one platform to fight against social ills bedeviling youths.
The event – a brainchild of rapper and poet, David “Flexxo” Mushawarukwa – was aimed at conscientising youths against ills such as drug abuse, pre-marital sex and stealing among other things.
The exciting initiative was also intended to identify, groom and promote young urban musicians.
“While bringing these artistes together, we intend to see these young people in music benefiting through works of art. Some of them rely entirely on music and it will be fair for them if they take the profession serious and earn a decent living that delving into drug abuse,” said one of the organisers, John “Baba Andile” Mujamba.
Organisers managed to bring one of the country’s hip hop pioneers and Harare-based talented rapper, Shingirai Sabeta, formerly known as Mau Mau to the eastern border city for the first time in so many years.

The Weekender caught up with the 45-year old Shingirai who also performed as a guest artiste at the event.
The rapper said he was releasing a new album titled Born Again before end of this year.
