Hippo shatters glass door at Kariba home

Walter Nyamukondiwa Kariba Bureau

A Kariba family had an unusual visitor Wednesday night when a hippo shattered glass panels on the main door while a stone throw away, the gate to another house was knocked down by an elephant.

Hardly two months ago, a hippo attacked the same house shattering the other half of the glass panel.

The incident occurred at around 2am in BaTonga Township when the hippo was grazing on the lawn adjacent to the main door.

According to people at the house, the hippo was grazing with its back to the glass door when it leaned on it and it shattered.

“The incident happened around 2am and when we woke up to see what had caused the noise, we saw the hippo’s back. This is the second time it has happened,” said a family member.

Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Chalala area manager Mr Artwell Sibanda said he was yet to get a report from his officers.

“I am not in the office but I am yet to get any report to that effect. I will check,” he said.
