The Permanent Secretary for Lands, Agriculture, Fisheries, Water and Rural Development, Professor Obert Jiri, has said the potential for a historic harvest is within reach following the rains being experienced across the country, urging farmers to conduct continuous scouting for pests and weed control.

Prof Jiri said Zimbabwe is experiencing a season similar to the historic rains of 1979 and 2009, noting that while the country is grateful for the green fields, the abundance of water brings its own set of “good problems.”

He said in areas such as Chisumbanje and Gokwe, the primary challenge has shifted from “When will it rain?” to “How do we stop our crops from drowning?”

“…stay in the fields, maintain constant scouting, and lean on local Agricultural Business Advisory Officers (ABAO),” said Prof Jiri.

“The potential for a historic harvest is within reach, provided Zimbabwe manages this abundance with precision and care.”

Prof Jiri acknowledged that while waterlogging and nitrogen leaching are significant concerns, they are far better challenges to face than drought.

To combat the “yellowing” of crops caused by excessive moisture, the ministry is encouraging a strategic shift in farming techniques. With fields often too muddy for traditional tractor applications, the focus has moved to foliar feeding — the application of liquid fertilisers directly to the leaves during short breaks in the rain.

To support this effort, Government is streamlining the arrival of duty-free fertilisers to ensure the “nitrogen gap” is bridged before the sun returns in full force.

Looking ahead, the ministry remains optimistic yet cautious.

As the Meteorological Services Department forecasts a brief slowdown in rainfall around January 24, a new battle begins — the fight against weeds and pests.

Prof Jiri warned that rising temperatures, particularly in the southern regions, could trigger an upsurge in African Armyworm and Fall Armyworm.
