Activity has heightened at Beitbridge Border Post since its re-opening last Friday morning following a temporary closure for disinfection and other measures after a South African worker tested positive for Covid-19.
Presently, border authorities are processing between 900 and 1 000 commercial trucks daily.
According to one border official, express lanes have been created for essential cargo on both sides of the border to minimise delays.
“More lanes have been opened up to expeditiously move essential cargo that had been delayed by the temporary border closure,” said the official.
When The Herald visited the border post, there were still long queues, although authorities were working hard to clear the backlog.
The number of commercial trucks on the highway leading to the border has increased as customs officers are clearing the trucks with priority being given to essential cargo.
