THE Minister of Sport and Recreation, Makhosini Hlongwane, has extended the mandate of the Sports and Recreation Commission board by three months. Hlongwane told Sunday News on Friday that the eight-member board, whose term of office came to an end on 5 February, has been asked to continue in office as plans were underway to put in place a new establishment. The SRC board is appointed for a period not exceeding three years.
“We have extended the tenure of the board by three months as we are sorting out modalities of appointing a new board,’’ said Hlongwane.
Led by acting chairman Edward Siwela, the board also comprises David Ellman-Brown, Jessie Nyakatawa, Ethan Dube, Miriam Mushayi, Obadiah Moyo, Aisha Tsimba and Farai Kanyangarara.
It was ushered in by then Minister of Education, Sport, Arts and Culture David Coltart in 2013. Andrew Langa who came in as Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture in 2013 did not tamper with the board save for Siwela who came in for the late Joseph James when the latter stepped down as chairman in 2014.
Hlongwane inherited the board when he came in September last year.
The board members are reportedly owed monies believed to be in the region of $13 000 each in sitting allowances with Hlongwane saying the matter had been brought to his attention and was looking into the issue. The Sports Minister in consultation with the President appoints the board of commissioners comprising not less than eight but not more than 12 members.
