Christmas in Bulawayo has never quite been the same since the closure of the iconic Meikles department store, once home to what many fondly remember as the city’s best Father Christmas. For years, the store offered young ones a magical chance to meet Santa and partake in various activities, creating memories that defined the festive season.

Yet, despite the absence of Meikles, the spirit of Christmas lives on, and children are still finding joy in the familiar red-and-white figure of Father Christmas.

As the world celebrates Christmas Day today, Bulawayo has taken on a cheerful glow, with Father Christmas figures popping up across the city.

From street corners and shopping centres to busy intersections, Santas have become a common sight, waving at passing motorists, posing for photographs, and spreading festive cheer.

Dressed in full costume, they have brought smiles to faces and excitement to the streets, especially among children who eagerly greet them with wide-eyed wonder and enthusiastic calls of “Ho ho ho!”

Residents say the presence of Father Christmas has helped rekindle the magic of Christmas, particularly after a challenging year for many families.

“Seeing Father Christmas on the streets makes you feel like it’s really Christmas,” said one resident.

“It lifts the mood, especially for children.”

Parents echoed similar sentiments, noting that these simple encounters create lasting memories for their children and help pass on the tradition of Christmas celebrations to a new generation.

“These moments may seem small, but they mean a lot to the kids. Taking a photo with Santa or just waving at him makes the day special,” said a parent.

Some of the Father Christmases who spoke to this reporter said the festive season allows them to interact with the community. They said Christmas is one of the busiest times of the year, as people move around the city shopping, travelling, and preparing to celebrate with loved ones.

Adding to the festive atmosphere, Bulawayo has also been lit up with Christmas lights, marking the celebration of Christmas Day today and giving the city a warm, joyful glow.
