Hockey association focus on reviving sport

Zimbabwe used to have a competitive league in the 1990s and to mark the beginning of the 2012 season, HAZ will hold its board meeting on 25 February to map the way forward.
“After last year’s continental competition that was held at Khumalo Hockey Stadium, we realised that our hockey had taken a heavy knock and vowed to work hard and revive the sport. We will have a board meeting in a fortnight and on that same day we will have an indaba, which will be open to stakeholders so that we share ideas ahead of the season.
“As part of reviving the sport we will be having our National League which will be played in Bulawayo and Harare later this year. We hope to have more competitions and clubs so that our players are always active and improve,” said HAZ president Kays Kanyangarara.
An Easter club tournament organised by Matabeleland Hockey Board is on the cards and  will run from 6-9 April at Khumalo Hockey Stadium.
Clubs from South Africa, Zambia and local teams are expected to compete at the Easter Club Tournament.
The first round of the National League will start in May at Khumalo Hockey Stadium with clubs from other parts of the country expected to participate.
The second round is set for Harare a month later.
HAZ will also hold coaching clinics for aspiring schools and club gaffers.
“For the sport to develop we need qualified personnel equipped with the latest knowledge so that our players are taught the right things. We are going to have coaching courses for schools and clubs.
“The reason why we are going for schools is that they play lots of hockey and we want those players to graduate to clubs for continuity’s sake,” Kanyangarara said.
