THE Under-17 Hockey Youth Olympics Qualifiers which were set to be staged early next month have been postponed to March.
The games will be held in Lusaka, Zambia from March 10-15. Hockey Association of Zimbabwe (Haz) spokesperson Humphrey Chigwedere confirmed that the games had been moved.
“The Hockey International Federation has confirmed that the games will be now played in March instead of mid-February,” said Chigwedere.
He said this move will give more time to the local Under-17 boys’ and girls’ teams which have been in camp. “We have been preparing for Youth Olympics Qualifiers for some time, the postponement of games will give us more time to fine tune our preparations and squads,” he said.
The teams had their final training session at Chisipite High School in Harare yesterday before the announcement of a final squad today.
“The final squad will be announced tomorrow (today) as we are having our final session today (yesterday) and the coaches will finalise everything before we break camp,” said Chigwedere.
He said teams will break camp today for schools opening while the selected players will have at least two squad weekends before the tournament.
Craig Hepburn has resigned as team manager of the teams.
