Holding bays ready for use

The facility was supposed to have been opened early this year but city fathers failed to meet the deadline citing lack of funds.
Town Clerk Dr Tendai Mahachi yesterday said the Coventry Road holding bay was now ready for use.

“There has been significant progress, we now have boom gates on both the northern and southern sides and have gate houses for the entrance and exit and various high density areas have already been allocated places,” he said.

The holding bay is expected to hold kombis plying the western suburbs routes and parts of the north-western suburbs. Dr Mahachi said the police would today assign officers to work at the holding bay and Copacabana terminus.

“Once it is working Market Square is the next to get attention. We have taken the limited resources available to try and restore sanity within the city.”
Dr Mahachi said once the commuter omnibuses drop off passengers they would be expected to go to the holding bay so that they do not create congestion in the city.

“ A separate pick-up point for those working in the industrial areas has also been put up at the holding bay.
“Those who are going to shun this idea will have the law enforcement agents to answer to,” he said.
