AT least 11 people died in 86 road accidents recorded across the country during the Heroes’ and Defence Forces holidays, a marked decline from the 24 killed last year, the police said yesterday.Many Zimbabweans take advantage of the Heroes and Defence Forces holidays to travel to their rural homes to conduct traditional ceremonies while other visit holiday resorts, resulting in an upsurge in road accidents.
Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) national spokesperson Chief Superintendent Paul Nyathi told New Ziana that a notable decline in road incidences was recorded this year compared to last year.
“At least 40 people were injured on the country’s highways this year compared to 129 in 2012,” he said.
Chief Superintendent Nyathi said 52 vehicles were impounded for various defects while 153 tickets were issued for various traffic offences.
He said the decline was largely a result of the increased visibility of the police on the highways and cautiousness of motorists.
“As you are aware, we have increased our visibility on the highways through road blocks, traffic blitz and we have conducted awareness campaigns were we have engaged other stakeholders such as the Traffic Safety Council, Vehicle Inspection Department (VID) and the public vehicles operators themselves,” he said. – New Ziana
