THE Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has fired a loud warning shot ahead of the Heroes and Defence Forces holidays, promising a no-nonsense approach to reckless drivers, pirate taxis, touts and criminals who threaten public safety.
In a statement, national police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi said officers are out in full force to ensure the 45th anniversary celebrations are crime and accident-free.

“We have deployed adequate manpower on the roads to ensure the public travels safely,” he said. “Decisive action will be taken against motorists who flout road rules and regulations.”
The long list of offenders on ZRP’s radar includes pirate taxis (mushika shika), unroadworthy vehicles, buses without permits, and unregistered or plateless vehicles. “These will be impounded,” warned Comm Nyathi. “Drivers found to be driving under the influence of alcohol will be arrested for the law to take its course.”

The police also turned sights on touts who terrorise travellers at bus termini, saying some were now linked to serious crimes. “Public service operators are warned against overloading and engaging touts who harass and intimidate potential passengers,” he said.
Holiday hotspots won’t be spared either, with Commissioner-General Godwin Matanga ordering increased patrols across residential, industrial and city centres.

“The crack teams set up to tackle robbery cases will be on high alert and will respond appropriately to reports of armed robbery in the country,” said Comm Nyathi.
He urged citizens to keep their cash habits low-key. “Do not carry or keep large sums of money at home or business premises. Companies and individuals are reminded not to share information on financial transactions or status with each and every employee or colleague.”

Unlicensed shebeens and bars operating beyond legal hours will be shut down, and parents have been urged to keep a close eye on their kids this school holiday.
“As schools close, parents are advised to properly monitor their children to curb cases of rape, drug and substance abuse. School authorities and parents should avoid night travelling for the safety of pupils,” said Comm Nyathi.

He encouraged the public to report criminal activities through their nearest police station or the National Complaints Desk on (0242) 703631 or WhatsApp 0712 800 197.
