Homela backs Gumbo

“I salute the decision by Zifa and the decision by Rahman to remain in charge of the national team. I do not begrudge him because coaching the national team at this stage is a sacrifice and you have to be a miracle maker to lead them to success.

“We do not have the material and the players have no quality and I am challenging anyone to come up with better players than those paraded last Sunday.

“Our quality is not up to standard and playing in South Africa does not provide Zimbabwe with quality,” said Homela.

Zifa have apologised for the senior team’s loss and expressed regret over the violent incidents while giving full support to Gumbo who is the interim coach.

Homela believes there is a lot of football politics at play at the moment and the revolt by fans was either for the coach or Zifa leadership and the same section was not going to be happy if Zimbabwe had won against Guinea on Sunday.

“Dynamos lost to Esperance because we do not have quality.

“We need players who command regular positions in teams like Barcelona, Manchester United, Real Madrid and Borrusia Dortmund if we are to get to the top not to measure our players with South Africa or Botswana standards.

“I had better players when I was with the national team but we had politicians in the team who refused to go to DRC as they feared the deadly Ebola.

“I started the Dream Team and we had good players despite the fact that we failed to qualify for the Nations Cup,” he said.

Homela also paid tribute to Sunday Chidzambwa and Charles Mhlauri for guiding the team to Afcon finals although he still believes that Zimbabwe must go past the group stages and make it to the final.

The former coach blasted the players for missing scoring chances.

“One breaks through but he pumps the ball at the goalkeeper and it’s obvious it will not go through.

“Guinea scored from a freekick because the player used the right technique,” he said.

Gumbo, whose team left today for Mozambique, was confident of winning his first match since rejoining the Warriors on interim basis.
