Dubbed “Rebels Ignited”, the gig has all the ingredients of a thriller with musicians Suluman Chimbetu, Jah Prayzah and Peter Moyo also billed to perform.Naturally, all eyes will be on the new outfit Extra Kwazvose or simply “The Rebels”.
Questions have been asked, conspiracies have been thrown in the air and the social media has in the past weeks been abuzz with people debating about the group.
The honeymoon for the “rebels” is over and it is time for the group to face the reality.
Comprising Francis Dhaka, Obert Gomba, Jonas Kasamba and Noel Nyazanda, the group know very well that it won’t be a stroll in the park for them.
There are Alick Macheso’s die-hard fans who will never forgive them for abandoning the veteran sungura musicians.
It is these fans who will find the slightest fault in the group. The fans will come guns blazing in the event of a flop or a damp squib.
The only way to silence these critics is to give it all on the stage.
Then, there is those neutrals who want to see the sungura genre being taken to another level.
A five-star performance from the group will easily win the hearts of these fans.
“It’’s like we are going into the lion’s den and we do not know what awaits us, but we are ready to give it all. We have been rehearsing and we are ready for the challenge,” said Franco.
For the first time, Franco will come face to face with his former boss Suluman Chimbetu.
This time Franco will be leading a coup d’etat that is capable of knocking the undisputed King of Sungura off his perch.
Franco knows the weight of the expectations on his shoulders. “People have known me as a dancer all these years. It is time for me to grow and in a few years to come, I would have carved out my name as a singer,” said Franco.
Sulu’s camp have so much respect and belief in the music outfit.
The dendera heir said the “rebels” had his full blessing.
“When I started singing some people labelled me a rebel and the same is being said about these ex-Macheso band members. I am actually looking forward to performing with them tonight,” he said.
A lot of talk has been done in the papers, public transport and watering holes, but tonight is the night.
It is time for the “rebels” to walk their talk. For this gig will either break or make them.
The group said they will stick to their songs written by both Slomo and Kasamba over the past 10 months.
Kasamba wrote “Africa”, “A’Jurias” and “Amen” while Slomo penned “Gurajena”, “Ishewangu Ndinotenda”, “Mai vaBonnie” and “Mudiwa Wangu”.
