Hope for diabetic patients

A local firm, Cassava HealthTech, will this month administer free diabetes tests to over 50 000 people throughout the country as part of its commemorations for the ongoing World Diabetes Month.

The exercise, which is being implemented through a joint operation between Cassava HealthTech’s subsidiaries — Steward Health and Maisha Health —will also see the company distribute free diabetes monitoring devices.

The company’s chief operations officer, Mr Denver Phiri, said the kits empower diabetic patients to manage their own health through self-testing.

“We are taking part in the world’s largest diabetes awareness campaign this month and, in line with this year’s theme of uniting the family against diabetes, Steward Health and Maisha Health will be issuing free state-of-the-art diabetes monitoring devices to eligible members of its medical aid plans that live with the condition,” he said.

“This empowers diabetic patients to manage their own health through self-testing, with the added assurance of their doctor monitoring them from anywhere in the world.”

The technology, Mr Phiri said, comes with devices that enable family members to instantly act on alerts of any abnormalities the devices record.

“This creates a wider care and support network around the diabetic patient, empowering them to manage the condition and avoid life-threatening complications,” he said.

“It also aligns with our vision to improve the quality of care for patients and it extends access to managed care.”

Healthcare experts say raising awareness, early diagnosis and treatment are critical in managing diabetes.

According to the International Diabetes Federation (IDF), one in every two people with diabetes is undiagnosed.

Cassava Smartech Zimbabwe CEO Mr Eddie Chibi said his organisation was determined to impact society and save lives through the use of digital technology solutions.

“Our aim, as the leading digital smartech services company in the country, is to positively impact society by offering digital health solutions that save lives and bring convenient and effective care at all times,” he said.

Cassava HealthTech is a part of Cassava Smartech Zimbabwe, the diversified fintech and digital smart technology company listed on the Zimbabwe Stock Exchange.
