rains that have been falling in some parts of the country, including the Midlands Province, have brought renewed hope for some farmers.
Although the rains came after crops had wilted due to too much heat, livestock farmers are hopeful that pastures will be revived.
Midlands crops and livestock officer Mrs Medline Magwenzi said the province received between 15 and 48 millilitres of rains which could resuscitate pastures. “We are really glad that we received the rains and they might boost pastures,” she said. “This will give farmers hope. But I know in some parts that received rains, the animals are safe.”
Mrs Magwenzi said while the rains were good for pastures, they were a little too late for crops which can only turn green on the outside but will not yield anything.
“We have written off any hope of salvaging anything from the fields even if it is going to rain for a whole month,” she said. Crops did not do well during the 2018/19 summer farming season and some families have started receiving food aid in some parts of the country.
