AFTER a two-year hiatus, the Hope Fountain 30km Road Race made its return yesterday with Vineal Moyo and Nevia Maganzo being crowned champions in the men’s and women’s category respectively.
The road race has been sponsored by Belmont Rotary Club for many years now.
Moyo from Blanket Mine was first to the finish line in the senior men category after an hour, 41 minutes and 23 seconds. Joseph Mashavakure was second with a time of 1 hour 41 minutes and 55 seconds. Peter Tumbare settled for third place after clocking 1 hour 41 minutes and 57 seconds.
In the women’s division, Maganzo was first to the finish line after 2 hours, 11 minutes and 57 seconds, Annie Chirisa came second in 2 hours 13 minutes and 24 seconds while Ever Mwembe finished third in 2 hours 47 minutes and 10 seconds.
More than 160 athletes took part in the event that also included the 7,5km walkthon. The race started at Centenary Park and finished at Hillside Dams.
The last road-race to be hosted by Bab was the Liquor Hub half marathon in December last year. The Hope Fountain Marathon is an annual race organised by the Rotary Club of Belmont and corporate partners to raise funds for charities.
The event has over the past decade become a regular feature on the annual athletics calendar. – @innocentskizoe
