HARARE City Council has flagged Nhando Zone 6 of Hopley as a new cholera hotspot due to lack of proper water reticulation and sewer systems.
This is forcing residents to rely on unsafe shallow wells for their daily water needs.
Council also reported cholera cases in Kuwadzana and Dzivaresekwa driven by use of water from unsafe shallow wells.
It is distributing aqua tablets in parts of Hopley and deploying water bowsers to deliver water to residents in the affected areas.
Free treatment for cholera is available at all Council clinics.
“The City of Harare is distributing aqua tablets in parts of Hopley as a way of containing the situation. We also have a number of cases reported around Dzivaresekwa with seven confirmed cases in the past week.
“The drivers are similar to those in Kuwadzana where there are sewer bursts and use of water from unsafe shallow wells and people not heeding the call of treating all water regardless of source.
“Council is currently working to establish more oral rehydration points so that people can have access to treatment where they stay.
“We are intensifying education to residents so that people are aware of the signs, symptoms of cholera and what to do when they get the symptoms,” reads a Council statement.
