Tacicias Phiri (25) has released a horror movie which he wrote and directed in his hometown of Gokwe in the Midlands province.
The feature-length production incorporates all elements of modern films including sound and picture effects as well as a story line which is believable despite the fictitious nature of the plot.
Titled “I Want My Life Back”, the film traces the lives of twin brothers Alex and Louis who are separated as toddlers after the former is kidnapped by a desperate woman who is childless.
The boys live in a place called Zhuzhaland which has a haunted forest with evil spirits which kill all people who dare to venture into its dark depths.
Louis becomes an outlaw who hangs with a group of robbers while Alex lives with his “mother” who raises him to become an honest driver for a local company.
Fate manages to bring them together when a botched robbery leads the brothers to discover that they both have a tattoo which their father put on their arms when they were little children, and Louis defies his boss and refuses to kill his own brother.
The boys become hunted by the gang of outlaws leading to the eventual death of Alex in the haunted forest, and the evil spirits resuscitate him in order to use him to kill innocent people and avenge his own murder.
However, the young man refuses to become an evil assassin and he encounters the wrath of the satanic monsters that are bent on killing him at all costs.
The story goes on to portray the fate of the twins and how they discover the truth behind their separation as they both encounter attempts on their lives from both evil spirits as well as the gang of outlaws from Zhuzhaland.
Despite a limited budget and little experience in filmmaking, Phiri manages to produce an entertaining thriller which is guaranteed to keep audiences on the edges of their seats.
“My aim was to make a film which was believable.
The issues of baby-snatching and witchcraft are a menace in our society, so I wanted to highlight them,” he said.
“Right now I am in negotiations with TV stations like ZTV and BossTV so that the people of Zimbabwe get a chance to watch the locally produced horror movie,” he said.
The cast includes Taitos Gundumure, Ireen Svondo, Tenjiwe Mlandeli and many others, and the movie was edited by Proceed Moyo.
