THE annual Horse Power Bulawayo football off season tournament has been moved to Johannesburg, South Africa.
The tournament’s founder and organiser, Madodana “Horse Power” Tshabangu said the tourney has been moved to where there are sponsors due to public demand.
“During our spell in Zimbabwe, we faced some financial challenges as we lacked sponsorship resulting in the tournament being suspended for two years. Most of the boys who once played in it here in Zimbabwe are now based in the neighbouring country and they requested that we move it there (South Africa),” said Tshabangu.
At least 16 teams compete in social soccer tournament, featuring teams based on residential areas and featuring even players from the top leagues in the country.
“The tournament is meant to entertain people especially youngsters during the festive season, it will also keep them from danger as most crimes are recorded in the Christmas and New Year’s holidays.
“Some will also have a chance expose their talent in the beautiful game of soccer,” Tshabangu said.
The 16-year-old tournament which is sponsored by 3G Tyres among other well-wishers will see clubs from Johannesburg suburbs including Roodepoort, Soweto, West Bank, Florida and Hill Fox battle it out. Clubs will pay an affiliation fee of R1 000 in order to participate.
A former footballer himself, Tshabangu also known as Sepp Blatter in local social football circles played for clubs like Context in 1974, Rhodal Football Club in 1976 and in 1978 he joined Premier League side Gweru United before hanging up his boots the following year. He played alongside former Highlanders legends Ernest “Maphepha” Sibanda and the late Titus Majola at Context.
