HORSE racing at Borrowdale Racecourse for the 2019/20 got underway yesterday under the watchful eye of local custodians of the game Mashonaland Turf Club.
Followers of the sport had the chance to watch the action unfold from the racecourse while others live via television broadcast.
There were seven races on the card made up of the two feature contests which were the centre of attractions for many reasons.
The new competition on the domestic calendar, the 2 700m long Sun Shine Cup alongside a spring event the 1 000m Borrowdale Handicap were some of the major attractions.
According to the programme pushed out by Mashonaland Turf Club, new trainer Thomas Mason is set to take his position alongside other trainers as the campaign for honours this season began. Another trainer followed her Leader Gokhan Terzi to help strategise for the season that is expected to end in August next year.
Mash Turf Club will host several race meetings before breaking in December for the festive season. Meanwhile, according to the latest statistic pushed out by Mash Turf Club, the Champion jockey for the 2018/19 racing season is Calvin Habib.
Habib posted 24 wins from 98 rides, he also had a combined total of 65 placing ranging from second to third, the highest being 24 second place finishes recorded. The other positions went to Henie Grayling, Brandon McNaughton as well as Wes Marking respectively. The Champion trainer is Bridget Stidolph followed by Kirk Swanson with Penny Fisher finishing in third position.
Trainer Gavin Macleod alongside Mason occupy the two bottom spots respectively as a result of their stables fielding few runners to fight for the prizes. The next race on the calendar is the ZRP Charity race set for running on 21 September at the same venue.
