A TOTAL of 86 horses will this afternoon compete in nine different races at the glamorous Borrowdale Race Course in Harare to mark the opening of the 2014 horse racing season.
There were three meetings that had initially been scheduled for January and the first two have been combined and will take place today. As a result, the month of January will have races this afternoon and on the 26th.
Today’s final fields will have nine races that include Maiden Juvenile Plate, Merit Rated 60 Handicap, Merit Rated 70 Handicap, Maiden Plate, Merit Rated 80 Handicap, Guineas Trial and Soccer 6 Maiden Plate.
The races will see esteemed trainers, Amy Bronkhors, Kirk Swanson, Lisa Harris, Gokhan Terzi, and D’Aquino SL return to Borrowdale Racecourse for the first time after the festive season. Probably the main horses to watch in the $7 500 worth Maiden Juvenile Plate that will have 10 horses competing, will be Macfly, Zeila, Ritzy Girl and Princes Tiara.
The first prize in this race will be $4 500, $1 500 will be the prize money for the first runner-up while $938 will be awarded to second runner-up. The rider of the horse that will come out fourth will pocket $562.
Nine horses that include Swanson’s Delta Special, Downtown Twilight, Gotago and Chando and Harris’ Weisteria Way, were entered for the Merit Rated 60 Handicap which has total pickings of $6 750.
The Merit Rated 70 Handicap will also have nine accepted horses competing in the 1 300metre race. The fourth race of the day will be the Rugby World Maiden 1 700 metre long race that has 11 accepted horses and $7 500 total stakes.
The other 1 700 metre long race will be the In Running Betting Merit Rated 80 Handicap that also has total stakes of $7 500 and 10 horses were accepted to take part.
The last contest of the day will be the 1 200 metre long Soccer 6 Maiden Plate worth $7 500 and 16 horses are going to take to the field. The top four after the race will get $4 500, $1 500, $938 and $562 respectively.
