The hospital’s chief executive officer, Mr Thomas Zigora, said this at a handover ceremony of an ICU bed worth US$21 000 that was donated by the Rotary Club supported by Hyundai Company.
“The critical care unit has the capacity to accommodate 10 children, but at present we have six ICU beds for six children. We cannot accommodate more because of equipment shortages,” he said.
Mr Zigora also said the hospital needed more resources to buy more beds for the adult critical care unit which only had six beds at present.
“The Government cannot do it alone, it needs assistance from other well-wishers,” he said.
He expressed gratitude for the donation, saying it would help improve ICU bed levels for children.
“We are grateful for the donation and this reflects the passion that we have for the little ones,” Mr Zigora said.
Hyundai Company director Mr Peter Marsh said the provision of support to the hospital was the responsibility of all citizens.
“All of us are responsible when it comes to hospital assistance. We as Hyundai Company realise the importance of children in Zimbabwe and hope many little ones will be assisted by the ICU,” he said.
Bed levels at Parirenyatwa Hospital raise concern over the country’s state of critical care services in case of a major disaster.
