hours.
The patients and their relatives, who were forced to scurry for cover, were quickly evacuated, with hospital officials saying no one was injured.
The hospital’s public relations manager, Mrs Jane Dadzie, confirmed the blast which occurred between 4pm and 6pm, but could not give more details, saying investigations were yet to establish its source.
“Yes, there was an explosion in one of the wards, but we are not yet sure what caused it. We are still on the ground trying to figure out what went wrong and a detailed report will be available tomorrow (today) morning,” she said.
However, sources said the blast was caused by a gas tank that was ripped open.
Mrs Dadzie could also not give the number of people who were in the ward at the time of the explosion, but said the ward had been abandoned with the affected patients taken to safer wards.
Some people who witnessed the explosion said the ward was engulfed in smoke soon after the explosion, making it difficult to breathe.
